Problems with import of US-spec MKIV?

Hallo neighbours!

I just have a question I hope you guys can help me with. I have a MKIV TT from 94. It is imported from the USA, so it is a US-spec. I have some family living in Germany, and I need it registered.

Did you guys who have US-spec supras have problems with the registration in Germany? MOT test and so on? In Denmark we need a "data declaration" on the vehicle and it is pretty hard to get, when the MKIV is from the US. I just want to know if it is piece of cake to register a US-spec MKIV in Germany, or do you also need to do hell of alot to get the data declaration?
Hope you guys can help me... thanks!

Best regards

Patrick from Denmark.

Hello Patrick,

I suppose you don't speak German?
In Germany you also need some kind of "data decleration" for importing the car. The issue is, every single TÜV-Centre handles the registration process different.
If you're going the very official way you will need a complete exhaust gas emission test and noise testing, and that's very expensive.
But: Some of the TÜV-Engineers take the data from the EU-Spec Supra (which every TÜV-Centre has in it's internal database) and use it as the "data decleration". And sometimes they only ask for the registration document "Fahrzeugbrief" of another US-Spec Supra registered in Germany and use the data in it for the new registration.

Thanks for the fast relpy!
Yes I don't speak German... only a little biticon_smile.gif
So I need to get a Fahrzeugbrief from someone in German who allready got a US-spec MKIV registred? Do you have many US-spec MKIV's in Germany?
The problem in Denmark is that the euro-spec MKIV have VIN numbers which starts with JT1.
The US-spec have JT2, so they can't find it in the system when you go to the MOT test. They only have data declaration on the JT1.

That's exactly the same problem we have here in Germany, the VINs are different.
I don't know how far you are away from the German border, since I would suggest that you drive with the car to a TÜV-Centre near you (probably in Schleswig-Holstein) and ask them what kind of documents they want to see. If they are asking you for an emission test just drive to the next TÜV-Centre.
Yes we do have a fistful of US-Specs in Germany, I hope some owners will reply in this thread.

Hey, my Supra was imported from Japan by a little import-company... So I guess, it does not matter whether the car is imported from Japan or the USA, the problems are supposed to be the same. Maybe that guy can answer you some question how to manage all that... visit his website...www.rotary-imports.de.
The guy's name is Ivan.
He imported my MKIV and managed everything. When I finally went to the regsitration it took me just 10 min and I got my license-plates... he did a great job!

Bye

We got many MKIVs from Japan in Denmark, alot more than we have Euro-specs. I don't think it is a problem to register J-spec MKIV, because the VIN number starts with JT1 aswell as the euro-spec. The problem is that the TÜV-engineers don't have the data declaration for the US-spec supras. So I can't just drive down to a TÜV-engineer and registrat my MKIV... I need the data declaration for it..

It would be great if the owners with US-spec supras could post how they did it...icon_smile.gif
